Comprehensive Analysis of Metal Surface Treatment Processes: From Principles to Applications
Metal surface treatment is a key industrial technology that changes the surface state of metals through physical, chemical, or electrochemical methods to improve their corrosion resistance, wear resistance, aesthetics, and other properties. It is widely used in various fields such as machinery manufacturing, automobiles, electronics, and aerospace, and is a core link to extend the service life of metal products and increase their added value.
Its core principles are divided into two categories: one is to isolate the metal from external corrosive media (such as air and moisture) through a coating, and the other is to change the chemical composition of the metal surface to form a corrosion-resistant and high-strength surface layer. Mainstream processes have their own focuses and are suitable for different scenario needs.

The electroplating process deposits metal ions on the surface of workpieces through electrochemical action to form a dense coating, with common types including zinc plating and chromium plating. The principle is to use electrode reactions to reduce and attach metal ions, which is applied to hardware accessories and auto parts, both preventing corrosion and improving glossiness. The spraying process atomizes the coating and uniformly covers the metal surface, forming a protective film after curing, which is divided into electrostatic spraying and powder spraying. It is suitable for home appliance casings and building profiles, with both corrosion resistance and decorativeness.
Oxidation treatment (such as aluminum anodizing) generates an oxide film on the metal surface through chemical or electrochemical methods. The principle is that the metal reacts with an oxidant to form a dense protective layer, which is mostly used for aluminum products and electronic components to improve wear resistance and insulation. In addition, phosphating treatment forms a phosphating film on the metal surface through chemical reaction, which is mainly used for steel workpieces to provide good adhesion for subsequent coating.
The rational selection of surface treatment processes should be based on metal materials, service environment and performance requirements. With the improvement of environmental protection requirements, green processes such as chrome-free passivation and environmental protection spraying have gradually become the industry mainstream, which not only retain core functions but also achieve low-carbon environmental protection, promoting the upgrading of metal surface treatment technology towards high efficiency, energy saving and environmental protection.
